About the project
Scorched is a limited runner created to bring awareness to the 60,000 forest fires that ravage the North America every year. The project aims to show the dangers and the environmental impact of these Natural Disasters and what the animals of North America have to endure.
The game was done with a team of five people, with I as the Rigging Artist, 3D Generalist, Texture Artist, Concept Artist, and Logo Designer during the making of Scorched. Programs used included Maya, Substance Painter, Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, and Figma.
3d development
During the style development of Scorched, we wanted models to be low-poly, yet stylized in it’s texturing. The results of these requirements meant hand-painting the Hero Asset’s coat and features, utilizing Substance Painter’s textured brushes to acquire the style desired. Rigging and and modeling were done in Maya, with elbows and knee topology to support deformation when animating. Hero asset animation were also done in Maya.
concept art
Concept art was created to visualize the geometric and painterly art style of the game. Color Pallet and lighting were taken of great importance as we wanted to evoke feelings of danger and dread through the use of color and lighting when running through the forest fire.
Water droplets, which are items you can collect in the game, were purposefully colored and textured with bright blues to evoke their importance to the player. The item helped bring contrast to the violent reds and oranges of the fire.
logo development
Iterations of the Logo included having the Fox, Vivian, be the letter ‘O’ in the word Scorched. There were also plans of making Scorched be carved into the charred remains of the log. The final concept of the logo came about after more iterations, with the final logo featuring a custom font made by me during the development of the logo design. Sketches were done in Procreate, while finalization were done in Adobe Illustrator.
in-game
art
For the credits, we came to the decision to draw ourselves as foxes. It was a fun addition to both personalizes the team and to allude to Vivian, the fox the player controls.
During the development of Scorched, we wanted to use matte paintings to help contain the levels while also providing a background. This idea however was scrapped due to conflicting style choices.
